Forest Service Issues Important Guidance on Mountain Bike Management
Addressing hundreds at the IMBA World Summit, Jim Bedwell, Forest Service director for recreation, heritage and volunteers, made a major announcement that will benefit mountain bikers nationwide. Bedwell presented a new agency memo clearly defining mountain biking as similar to hiking and equestrian use, and an activity to be managed separately from motorized travel. The document, written by Deputy Chief Joel Holtrop, is a significant step in the evolution of mountain bike management on Forest Service lands, and has been distributed to agency staff at the regional and local levels.

East Bay Cyclists Face a $500 Million Dilemma
Mountain bikers in San Francisco's East Bay have a 20-year history of bitter access battles with their regional park district. Now, a $500 million bond measure supporting the parks poses a tough choice for cyclists: should they oppose the measure, despite their natural commitment to preserving open space, or should they support it, despite being barred from nearly all of the parks' singletrack? The Bicycle Trails Council of the East Bay is working to convince the district that making a significant new commitment to bicycle access could win the hearts -- and votes -- of the cycling community.

Grants For Trails -- Deadline Soon!
The California Trails & Greenways Foundation is accepting applications for small grants, up to $5000, with a deadline for submittal coming up: September 30. Jim Hasenauer who sits on the Foundation board encourages clubs with a project that benefits the 'shared use' community to apply. For example, last year The Sonoma County Trails Council earned $1000 to publish a trails stewardship and crew leader training manual. You can find the grant application with instructions for electronic submittal. If you have any questions, let Jim, or IMBA Rep Cathy Haagen-Smit know.

Bikes Belong Grants Helping Build MTB Trails
An $8,000 grant from Bikes Belong will support Team Evergreen Trailblazers' trail work in the Buffalo Creek Recreation Area of the Pike National Forest. A major destination for mountain bikers from the Denver and Colorado Springs metro areas, the trail system at Buffalo Creek is well loved - and well used. Trail expansion there will help mitigate user conflict by giving equestrians, mountain bikers, and hikers more room to ride and roam. Learn more about Bikes Belong grants.
