Trail Care Crew Completes Spring California Tour
The Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crew's newest team, Inga Beck and Jason Van Horn, have wrapped a five-stop tour of California. Starting in San Diego, the crew leapfrogged their way up the coast to the Sea Otter Classic in Monterrey. Along the way, they worked with amazing volunteers from Santa Barbara, San Francisco and Salinas. The new crew has hit their stride, as you can tell by the rave reviews they've received.

Success at Sea Otter!
IMBA California rolled out a large presence at the Sea Otter Classic this past weekend, raising funds and increasing awareness of critical issues, including new Wilderness legislation that could threaten state park trails. Other themes included the need to address widespread trail closures in Santa Cruz, and new opportunities in Marin County and the King Range. The tally from Sea Otter includes:

  • More than 100 IMBA members joined or renewed
  • Benefit party and the premier of Freedom Riders drew more than 300 people and raised over $6,000
  • 70 attendees gathered for the IMBA CA Advocacy Summit
  • Hand-delivered contribution of $1000 from
  • Team IMBA riders from San Francisco Urban Riders raised $7,000 at Sea Otter, which, with the challenge grant from SRAM, translates to $10,500 for new trails

Thanks to all IMBA partners involved with special events over the weekend: Crank Bros., CLIF Bar, FOX Racing Shox, Yakima, Gary Fisher, Subaru, GU, SRAM, KGB Productions/Gravnetic, New Belgium Brewing, Sea Otter Classic and Niner. Props to Specialized for their "above and beyond" support for all IMBA CA efforts. Our momentum is strong -- ask a friend to join IMBA CA today.

Public Commentary Period Expected for New Trails for Mt. Tamalpais
IMBA California Policy Director Tom Ward says that new opportunities for opening singletrack trails in Marin County can be expected in upcoming months. "We have a commitment to hold a public commentary period by June 1, or perhaps even earlier," says Ward. He warns that opposing groups are already threatening to take legal action against any shared-use trail openings. The Legal Advocacy Fund is earmarked for exactly this kind of situation, so please contribute what you can.

Specialized Web Page Touts Advocacy
Specialized Bicycles has long stood as IMBA California's most committed corporate supporter. They recently introduced a great new advocacy web page that outlines the company's commitment to bicycle advocacy. It features news, dozens of links and IMBA's own Rules of the Trail.

Executive Director Van Abel on Fire About $1 Million Gift for OR Bike Park
IMBA executive director Mike Van Abel exclaimed, "Now that's what I'm talking about!" after reading that an anonymous donor recently provided a $1 million boost to plans for a new bike park in Oregon. "I believe we are entering a new era for mountain bike facilities," explains Van Abel, adding, "IMBA's message about the value of well-funded model trail systems is inspiring individuals, foundations and companies to new heights." IMBA's Jill Van Winkle helped present a concept plan for the Oregon park this week, and noted that and IMBA/REI Stewardship Grant will help fuel the trails. IMBA will also play a leadership role in planning and building the bike park.

Public Lands Omnibus Bill Becomes Law
The 160-bill Public Lands Omnibus Management Act, has been signed into law. Many of the bills -- including those in Oregon, Virginia and Colorado -- were shaped with mountain bikers' interests in mind. One of the Omnibus Act's biggest benefits is the use of creative solutions to protect bicycle access and the environment. In particular, companion land designations that IMBA favors -- like National Scenic Area and National Recreation Area -- are giving land managers new options for bicycle-friendly land protection. Unfortunately, though, prized riding opportunities were lost in West Virginia (Wild Monongahela Wilderness) and California (Eastern Sierra and Northern San Gabriel Wilderness).

IMBA Secures $600,000 to Expand CA Paradise Royale Trail
Mountain bikers are buzzing about a $600,000 federal funding appropriation to expand Paradise Royale, a purpose-built mountain bike trail in California's King Range National Conservation Area (NCA). The funds derive from the 2009 omnibus appropriations bill (H.R.1105), which became law on March 30, 2009, (P.L. 111-8). The appropriation follows years of lobbying by IMBA California Policy Advisor Tom Ward. A feature story in the March issue of Bike magazine that suggested Paradise Royale, "might be America's best new trail."
