NBDA Moves Forward with UPC/GTIN Technology Initiative
The UPC (Universal Product Code or "bar code") and GTIN (Global Trade Item Number) integration has been a steady initiative for the NBDA. Those in attendance at this year's Bicycle Leadership Conference learned more about how proper implementation of this coding throughout the entire supply and retail channel can save businesses at all levels time and money. NBDA encourages suppliers to use GTINs (or UPCs) on their products as soon as possible, to print barcodes on packaging whenever possible and clearly publish GTIN numbers on price sheets so a single number (the GTIN) will be entered into dealer POS systems. The GTIN should also be included in dealer-accessible databases. NBDA intends to publish articles on the benefits of minimizing the manual labeling of products, establishing a foundation for electronic order integration between POS companies and suppliers, setting up the capability for potentially collecting data for the industry, improving integration between POS and other applications, and possibly creating an easier way to establish a dealer-to-dealer product exchange.

NBDA Represents U.S. Dealers in Taipei
Fred Clements, NBDA's Executive Director continued his involvement with the Taiwanese A-Team by participating at the March 25 meeting at the Taipei International Cycle Show 2007. The A-Team, a contingent of manufacturers and suppliers who work to make progress in manufacturing efficiencies in Taiwan, featured presentations from Trek's John Burke and Specialized founder Mike Sinyard. During the meeting's "brainstorming" session, Clements urged Taiwanese manufacturers to consider cleaner and more sustainable manufacturing going forward, and to make efforts to talk about their successes. Clements also pointed out that the U.S. market continues to be increasingly interested in the sustainability movement.
