Oberstar Unveils Bike-Friendly $450 Billion Transportation Bill
Administration and U.S. Senate Propose 18-Month Delay It was just the first stage of what could be a long race to finalize the next transportation bill, but the June 22 unveiling of the Surface Transportation Authorization Act of 2009 by Rep. Jim Oberstar (D-MN) was a promising start for future federal bike project funding.

Mr. Oberstar, chair of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, introduced a bill to the Subcommittee on Highways and Transit that proposes to spend $450 billion on transportation between October 2009 and September 2015. While Oberstar's dollar proposal is far from set in stone, it represents a more than 50 percent annual increase above current overall spending. While his bill includes almost no line-item financial details, it proposes a variety of elements that would benefit bicycling.

Mr. Oberstar and a bipartisan group of allies are pushing for full Congressional ratification of this bill by Sept. 30, 2009 - the day the previous federal transportation bill expires.

But, the Obama Administration and U.S. Senate have called for an 18-month extension of the current law - a period of time that would allow the federal government to develop a new transportation funding model. (The current fuel excise tax no longer provides enough revenue to pay for roads, transit, and bicycling and walking taxability and programs.)... Read the full story.

Bikes Belong Welcomes New Staff
Please join us in welcoming three new Bikes Belong staff members, all of them working to put even more people on bikes more often.

Bruno Maier joined the Bikes Belong staff in June as the organization's fulltime membership and development director. Bruno's stellar resume includes years as the executive VP of marketing for Cannondale, as well as work for GT, Schwinn, Mongoose, Brunswick, and Huffy.

As the new marketing and communications coordinator, Joan Harrold works to publicize Bikes Belong's work and promote bicycling. She will also take a leadership role in the upcoming consumer outreach campaign designed to engage individuals in supporting bicycling's political agenda.

Starting in August, Zach Vanderkooy will lead an exciting new Bikes Belong project. The goal? To make U.S. bicycling safer and more appealing by publicizing and adapting the innovative, cost-effective bike facility designs that have been implemented in the Netherlands, Denmark, and other northern European countries.

Research Symposium and New Surveys Assist Industry
Bikes Belong has been hard at work the past few months making strides to improve bicycling research.

In May, we held an unprecedented Bicycling Research Symposium in Boulder, CO., bringing together bicycling's top academic professionals. With 11 researchers in attendance from such diverse fields as urban planning, architecture, public health, civil engineering, environmental science, and public policy, the symposium provided a valuable meeting of the minds to share ideas about the relationship between bike advocacy and research. Read more about the event.

Also on the research front, we've recently conducted a series of surveys. In the first survey, we explored the issues surrounding access to skateparks for BMX riders to learn why bike use is restricted and what strategies support shared use. Nearly 100 skatepark managers from 30 states were surveyed; 46% of the parks ban bikes. View the full report and results.

Soon, we'll release the results from two additional surveys - one to assess the value of advocacy for bicycle retailers and another to summarize the impact of recreational road rides. Keep an eye on our Research page to learn more.

New Resources Available on Our Website

  • Annual Report Snapshot - The 2008 Bikes Belong Annual Report Snapshot is now available on our website. Despite a difficult economy in the second half of 2008, Bikes Belong produced another great year - highlighted by our partnership with Humana on a successful presidential conventions bike-loan project. We earned increased support from the bicycle industry as well as foundations and non-endemic corporate partners, enabling us to boost our nationwide investment in important bicycling projects. In 2008, we contributed more than $800,000 in direct cash support to national, state, and local bicycle programs and projects.

  • Searchable Statistics Library - Our Bicycling Statistics Library just got even better. In addition to being able to sort by type of statistic, such as health or safety, you can now also search by keyword to find a statistic of interest.

  • Bikes Belong in Action - Follow our news blog for quick updates about the things we do on a day-to-day basis to get more people riding more often. You can sign up for the RSS feed or check our website for updates.

Quick Releases

  • Bikes Belong will support two Congressional fundraisers in August. The first, for Representative Earl Blumenauer, will be held Aug. 4 in Portland, OR, at the headquarters of Cycle Oregon. The second, for Representative Jim Oberstar, will be held Aug. 13 in Madison, WI. Blumenauer and Oberstar are the top two supporters in Congress for bicycling facilities and programs. They have consistently stood tall for our agenda. This year, both are doing more than ever to increase federal funding for bicycling and to make sure that our key programs and funding sources endure and grow. For more information, contact Bruno Maier.

  • Bikes Belong announced our spring grant awards earlier this summer, totaling nearly $50,000 for bicycling. Funding in this round will help launch programs, build facilities, and measure success for bicycling in six U.S. communities. The summer 2009 grants will be announced the week of Aug. 10.

  • Bikes Belong has moved our headquarters to better accommodate our staff. Our new physical address is: 1928 Pearl Street, Boulder, CO 80302.
